The Distillery follows the industry standard of $40-50/hr for all editing services. We think we're well worth it. When you contact us, we will evaluate your manuscript according to your stated goals. Then we will provide an estimate for how long we think your job will take.
Below are approximate editing/reading times:
* A page is defined as double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins
$60 project minimum.
Estimate must be paid in full before editing begins. Exceptions apply.
All payments are made securely via PayPal invoicing.
Basic Copyediting/Heavy Copyediting
Solid writing projects that are near completion often require only basic copyediting. In these cases, we focus on punctuation, grammar, subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, typographical errors, spelling errors and basic word choice (denotation). If it turns out that your manuscript contains a significant number of errors and needs heavy copyediting--and thus more time spent by our editors--we will let you know up front in our estimate.
Complete Editing - substantive or line
Includes all Copyediting services, as well as the following:
Proofreading
Proofreading is reserved, by definition, for projects approaching publication. This is your final line of editing defense. We go through your manuscript with a fine-toothed comb to catch any and all errors. When we're finished, your project will be ready for the world.
Manuscript critique
(May be combined with other packages or purchased individually.)
Critique and collaboration are our real passions. This service can take many forms, but might best be thought of as an advanced creative writing workshop. We will evaluate your story for style, coherence, meaning, effectiveness, plot, character, and much more. If an element in your story isn't working, we'll tell you. If we think you're the next Flannery O'Connor, we'll tell you that, too (then slam our heads against a wall in jealousy). This service isn't a line edit. Rather it is a creative collaboration--one artist to another.
MFA Application Evaluation
Give yourself the best chance possible of getting into your dream program. Our experts at The Distillery will read your fiction or creative non-fiction writing sample and provide you with a detailed critical analysis (no line edits). We have extensive experience (i.e., several MFA degrees between us) with masters creative writing programs, and we know what admissions boards are looking for. A flat fee of $75 applies. We will provide a 1-2 page written critique highlighting what's working, what's not working, and what you can do to improve.
